Choosing Between a BA or BS Degree

Choosing Between a BA or BS DegreeIf you are deciding between a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science for your major, what you’ll choose will determine the appropriate degree. However, a dilemma is usually underlying in the decision. A BA and BS are two different types of degrees, and each is concentrated on training you for the demands fixed in the fields. The career you choose to have can be gauge in the kind of hard work you are expected to give. While each may need the same level of educational needs such as basic science, humanities, mathematics and communication skills, the rest is taken in the elective subjects that will complement your degree though not required, except for filling in the number of units required for the given semester.

Usually, the Bachelor of Arts (BA) is more comprehensive and broader. In most schools it provides trainings for complex thinking, reasoning, questioning and analysis, which are all about enhancing the intellectual abilities. Generally, in many fields it provides for a broader knowledge. Moreover, this field helps in promoting the student’s ability to think and learn more independently, thus preparing her/him for a wider career option. In most cases, the Majors include languages, literature history and philosophy, but not limited to it. It necessitates not less than 120-160 credits of college level courses. Normally, thirty credits are required in one area of focus, and the half of which in the higher levels.

On the other hand, the Bachelor of Science (BS) degree is more concentrated on the technical or scientific fields, indeed. The credits required range from 120-160 credits, if not more. It requires attaining knowledge in the more functional manner. In this regard, understanding mathematics in a more comprehensive manner is required. Therefore, students are expected to spend more of their time memorizing the complex systems and mastering contemporary technology as well as in research, while less time for general thinking skills. While there is room for electives, most of the subjects taken are related to the major itself. A BS major usually prepares you to become more professional in your field.

About

It is a Sunday morning. While most Londoners are either home relaxing or out having fun, Andrea is all set to attend her "class". Settling into a comfortable chair in her flat, she powers up her laptop and log onto the Internet and catch up on school work.

Welcome to the new world of online education. In today's increasingly busy world, taking time out to do a full-time degree course can be extremely difficult and as one would imagine, can be more and more difficult as work and family pressures increase. This is where Internet-based education or online education which overcomes the stumbling blocks of time and distance provides a viable alternative to traditional degree programs.

Distance learning, once carried out exclusively through the mail or correspondence education has long been regarded as not at par with physically attending classes. With the growth of the Internet and networking technologies, all that has now changed the academic world.

With the arrival of distance learning via telecommunications and online technology, you can earn a degree from an online university without ever sitting in a classroom. Today, many traditional schools and exclusively "virtual universities" are offering online degree programmes.
